Coastal communities face a variety of challenges including sea level rise, coastal ecosystem management, tsunami risk and exposure to coastal storms. Coastal resiliency and sustainability depends up the development of services that inform about coastal hazards, including but not limited to improved forecasts of local sea level rise and associated increases in coastal inundation that may be exacerbated by increases in the frequency of extreme weather. Likewise, services focusing on the state and potential degradation of coastal ecosystems, including loss and modification of crucial habitats such as mangroves, coral reefs and estuaries, as well as the state of other environmental conditions, including water quality (e.g., coastal eutrophication and hypoxia; human exposure to waterborne pathogens; harmful algal blooms), are key contributions needed to provide accurate and timely support for decision making for sustainable coasts.
Blue Planet projects associated with this theme will aim to produce services that improve access to environmental intelligence for stakeholders in the coastal zone. Projects will facilitate adaptive, ecosystem-based approaches (EBAs) to sustainable development, including goods and services, marine spatial planning and management. Sustainable development depends on the continued provision of ecosystem goods and services valued by society. EBAs require the sustained provision of multidisciplinary data (biogeochemical and ecological as well as geophysical) and information on ecosystems states, especially in the coastal zone where goods and services are most in demand and of great socio-economic value and benefit.
CZCP – The Group on Earth Observations Coastal Zone Community of Practice brings together scientific and non-scientific experts in an effort to support coastal zone management through utilization of Earth observations and derived products. The CZCP focuses both on research and practical applications related to coastal zone management.
GEO Water Quality – The GEO Water Quality Community of Practice aims to develop international water quality information systems based on Earth observations with a focus on the developing world.
